Kidney Disease

Your kidneys act as a filter in the body removing excess waste and fluid, to keep your body working right and feeling healthy. If your kidneys lose function, they are unable to balance the build up of waste products and fluid causing illness. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), also known as chronic renal disease, is the progressive loss in kidney function over a period of months or years.

As kidney disease advances, it leads to kidney failure and total loss of function. This is also know as end-stage kidney disease, or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). At this stage, there is dangerous accumulation of waste and fluid in the body, requiring people to get dialysis treatment or kidney transplantation to stay alive.

Dialysis is used to treat CKD. Dialysis is effective at removing most waste and fluids but it is also necessary to modify what you eat and drink.
